| The Ganga Talao (Grand Bassin)
|
Locally
known as the Grand Bassin, the Ganga Talao (The Lake of Ganga) is the
spiritual capital of Mauritius for its Hindu citizens. Its entry is the
long road just aside Pétrin, one of the main entries to the Black River
Gorges. Surrounded by green forests and other water bodies like the Mare
aux Vacoas, Trou Kanaka and Bassin Blanc, it gives the natural feel of
being in a godly heaven with its clean and fresh air, the sound of
nature and the bliss of the spiritual auras of the magnificent lake and
temples and the melodious sounds of the temples’ bells.
At the
entry is the huge and imposing statue of Lord Shiva, welcoming his
devotees to his abode. The Ganga Talao is the main destination of the
Hindu people on the festival of Mahashivratree, one of the main
festivals celebrated in the country. Days before the festival, thousands
of devotees take the road to the lake on pilgrimage. They fetch the
holy water of the lake and offer it to the Lord on his great night, the
MahaShivratree.
